1. Robert Redford
QUOTE: “Fracking is a bad deal for local communities. It’s been linked to drinking water contamination all across the country.” – Robert Redford
TRUTH: In a major study released by the Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA found that fracking has not “led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water resources in the United States.”
2. Matt Damon
QUOTE: “Everyone knows that fracking poisons the air and water.” – Matt Damon
TRUTH: On top of not leading to poisoned water, the study found that 97% percent of wells had a casing and a layer of cement to protect drinking water resources, making it even LESS likely for the wells to be contaminated.
3. Brooks Headley
QUOTE: “NYC is the greatest city for pizza, and a lot of people say that’s because of the water. If we destroy the water supply, we destroy New York pizza” – Brooks Headley
TRUTH: Again, the study was quite clear that it had found no “evidence that these mechanisms have led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water”. It also noted that in that accidents were rare, calling them number of cases “small relative to the number of hydraulically fractured wells.”
4. Mark Ruffalo
QUOTE: Mark Ruffalo is quoted as saying that fracking is causing “water contamination, rampant air pollution, swarms of earthquakes, poisoned farmland and animals, and sick residents.”
TRUTH: Besides the EPA stating that fracking does not cause widespread poisoning of water, the US Geological Survey found no evidence that fracking causes earthquakes. Additionally, the growth of natural gas (what fracking produces) has caused CO2 emmissions to drop to their lowest levels in 20 years due to them emitting lower level of carbon per evergy unit.
5. Yoko Ono
QUOTE: Yoko Ono called fracking a “threat to our water.”
TRUTH: “We did not find any evidence…” – Environmental Protection Agency
